These stitches in my head are… AWESOME. However, they’re a little itchy and I wish they were a little brighter blue in color to make it easier to show around to friends and co-workers. After that freak elbow split my head open last week, E.A. Horton took me to the Emergency Room and she said, “I’ve never seen someone so enthusiastic about getting stitches!” I was in great spirits. Mostly because I beat all the drunks to the E.R. on a Friday night and was in and out in less than an hour. But, because of this scar on my head, I will never forget this chapter in my life. I’ll always remember meeting my trainer Jimmy Farrell Jr., being in the ring, and discovering a side of myself I never experienced before.
People ask, “Do you get paid for this?!”
“Not yet, not exactly… but that’s the idea. This is my dream job, to inspire others to go big with their lives. And some company will want to tag along for the ride of my life.”
People say, “What’s wrong with you?! Something MUST be wrong with you”
“Nothing’s wrong with me… I’m the sanest person I know.” There’s so much in life that I want to do/experience/explore. Why not do all of the things you’ve ever either wanted to do or been scared of?
The objective is to not just DO stuff, it’s to be good/great at it. To learn/practice/experience and share it with you. Any challenge I do must meet one of more of the following criteria:
1. Learn a new skill and put it to use.
2. Meet more awesome/interesting people.
3. Create more awesome memories (this covers a TON of stuff, possibilities are endless).
If you want to do or be something, get off your ass and go do it. You’ll meet a bunch of new people, be happier, be in better shape, feel alive, and, if you’re lucky, you might find yourself in the Emergency Room getting stitches in your head (and we’ll both have awesome new scars!).
I’m flattered every time someone emails me for advice, which is mostly on how to “look” fit, how to “look” like I do (you know, six-pack, huge wiener, nice man boobs). But, in all honestly, the best advice I can offer are these words of wisdom:
“If you want something bad enough, you’ll make it happen. If you don’t want it bad enough, you won’t.”
People email me all the time saying, “I want to lose weight” or “I want a six pack”. I give them all straight-up legit advice. “Eat this, do this in the gym 6 or 7 days a week, do cardio, do this, do that, blah blah blah.” But, everyone wants a short cut. Everyone wants it now with minimal effort. Everyone wants to be fit or happy but they don’t want to earn it.
I got my head split open when I was sparring during my boxing training a few days ago. It didn’t scare me away from my goal of fighting. I got it sewn up and the next day I hit some strength training and the day after that I hit the weights again AND I got back to the boxing gym to get my boxing training in. I love this M7 Challenge, love how it feels to be a part of a small, underground boxing gym… and I’m having a great time. Some people at my day job think I’m nuts, but I’m living my life the best way I know how. Anyone can do it… if they want to.
I walked into the the Cyr Farrell Boxing Gym tonight and Jimmy greeted me by saying, “Hey, Champ!” I’ve earned the smile on his face when I walk in the door. I’ve earned the ability to walk in that gym and feel like I belong there.
He said, “You’ve got a physiological advantage. I saw Britt hit you on the chin, and I thought, oh man, that’s it, he’s done, he’s knocked out. But, it didn’t phase you… you walked right through it. Do you remember him hitting you on the chin like that?”
“Uh… no.” I remember getting hit with lots of punches, but I don’t remember any of them in particular.
Jimmy: “You’ve got an advantage. You can’t teach that. You can’t teach someone how to take a shot on the chin.”
Lucky me. I told Jimmy, “Hey, if you see a fight card coming up in the next few weeks and you find someone you think I should fight, you’ve got carte blanche to schedule it. I trust you. Just schedule it and we’ll make it happen.”
Next lesson: Learn how to avoid more punches.
Be Great,
M7
